on the tiniest lives.

Thousands of babies rely on our milk bank.

When fragile, hospitalized newborns need vital nutritious milk, Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) across the country rely on our Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank - the only one of its kind to deliver high-quality milk to these tiny patients. As more vulnerable infants require care, we urgently need to raise $200,000 for our own onsite milk analyzer - this specialized equipment will help us provide optimal nutritional quality of donor milk and more of it.

Help bring our tiniest patients the vital nutrition they need.

Graham and Marshall got their best start thanks to the milk bank.

When Ellen gave birth to her twin boys prematurely, they had to be placed in incubators, making it difficult for her to nurse them as often as she had hoped. Plus, having been induced, it took longer for her milk to come in. The boys lost 10% of their already low birth weight. She was beyond grateful when donor milk became their lifeline. By helping purchase a milk analyzer and supporting the milk bank, you’re reassuring concerned parents that vital nutrition is available for their vulnerable babies.

  • Sometimes new moms need support meeting their babies’ nutritional needs. This can occur for a variety of reasons, including:
  • Multiple births (i.e., twins, triplets)
  • Stress of preterm birth
  • Medical conditions, like cancer
  • Inability to put baby to breast to stimulate milk production (e.g., mom has a breast infection or the baby must remain in an incubator)

The milk bank can help provide vital nutrition for their babies and comfort for the families. Your monetary donation can help us maintain the quality of that milk with our own, onsite milk analyzer.

FAQs about the milk bank:

There are approximately 1,500 low birth weight babies in hospitals across Ontario a year and 70% of them don’t have access to a full supply of their mother’s own milk, leaving them with reduced vital nutrients and protective properties. Donor milk could reduce their risk of life-threatening medical complications. The families of medically fragile babies will benefit from knowing that there is donor breastmilk available for their baby to supplement their mother’s own supply.

Babies who are born pre-term or are hospitalized after birth would be eligible (depending on the hospital, weight and gestation) to receive human donor milk. If you are unable to provide/produce breast milk for your baby, you can discuss the available options with your health-care provider.

The Milk Bank follows guidelines set by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) and public health regulations governing the handling, processing and storage of food.

Breast milk that has been donated to a milk bank and pasteurized in a heat treatment process that eliminates harmful bacteria and viruses.

The pasteurization process is similar to that used to ensure the safety of cow’s milk. Pasteurized donor milk goes through a rigorous testing process to ensure its safety.

Your gift, no matter the size, makes a big impact on our tiniest patients - and everyone who enters our doors.
