HONOURING THE MEMORY OF ONE OF TORONTO’S RESTAURANT PIONEERS

June 17, 2024

Harry Barberian

Harry Barberian was an entrepreneur, a visionary and a family man. His unmatched flare for hosting delighted the wide range of guests, including Prime Ministers and movie stars, who frequented the Barberian’s Steak House after he opened it in 1959. Harry had a humble beginning and relished the opportunity to give back to anyone in need. His efforts helped launch the careers of hundreds of fellow restaurateurs and his influence helped shape Toronto’s culinary landscape.

When Harry was treated for cancer by Dr. Jeremy L. Freeman, MD, FRCSC, FACS at Mount Sinai Hospital in 1986, the care he received provided him with many additional wonderful years, which were a gift to his family and the city itself. In 2013, the Barberian family launched an annual memorial dinner to honour Harry’s legacy and raise funds to support those pursuing research and careers in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, part of Sinai Health.

Mount Sinai Hospital performs over 3,000 cancer surgeries a year, including the most complex cases in Toronto for patients with breast, head & neck, bladder and prostate, sarcoma, and colorectal and abdominal cancer. Supporting research and education initiatives in this area paves the way for future breakthroughs and contributes to continuing the high standard of care for patients during their cancer journeys.

Celebrating a fundraising milestone at the eighth annual Harry Barberian Memorial Dinner

This year, the Barberian family celebrated the eighth edition of the signature event and marked a milestone of fundraising success – a cumulative $1.16 million raised for research and education since the event began. The evening was attended by over 100 notable guests.

“This cause is incredibly close to our hearts,” says Arron Barberian, Harry’s son who now carries on his father’s legacy as owner of the famous Toronto steak house. “Mount Sinai Hospital has been able to make significant contributions to cancer research across the globe thanks to the dedicated efforts of not only the medical staff but also the residents, fellows, and junior faculty. We are proud to bring attention to this important work and celebrate the excellent care my father received at the Hospital.”

Sinai Health Foundation is grateful to be a part of honouring Harry’s memory and thankful to the Barberian family for their ongoing support.
