A talented and innovative surgeon, the late Dr. Gerald Baker pioneered new dental techniques in Canada, starting in the 1970s with a revolutionary and minimally invasive method of removing impacted wisdom teeth.
In later years, Dr. Baker inaugurated the use of titanium implants in North America and trained hundreds of oral surgeons in the procedure. Chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, he served as a teacher and administrator as well as surgeon.
Among his many accomplishments was the establishment of the internationally recognized Regional Treatment Centre for Reconstructive Surgery of the Temporomandibular Joint at Mount Sinai Hospital.
It’s been said there are few dentists in Canada who weren’t either students of or influenced by Dr. Baker. A beloved mentor, he knew when his residents were ready to tackle the toughest challenges. What’s more, he managed to convince even nervous patients to trust their care to the young dentists under his supervision.
This Chair, endowed with a minimum $3 million and to be held by future dentists-in-chief, will ensure the department of dentistry at Sinai Health continues to be the world-class program Dr. Baker helped build.
