Dr. Howard Ovens is credited with a long list of impressive accomplishments since he began his clinical emergency practice in 1982.
As Mount Sinai Hospital's chief of emergency medicine for 30 years, Dr. Ovens led the Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Centre through dramatic growth while ensuring the focus remain on creating the best possible patient experience.
Under his leadership, Mount Sinai became internationally recognized for innovation in the emergency care of older adults and respectful treatment of marginalized populations, including those suffering from homelessness, mental illness and/or addictions.
Dr. Ovens was instrumental in conceiving and establishing the Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Medicine Institute at Mount Sinai. The only one of its kind in Canada, the institute is an international leader in research that advances wide-ranging aspects of emergency care.
A preeminent emergency medicine thinker, Dr. Ovens has influenced practices in emergency department overcrowding, mandatory gunshot wound reporting, technology for efficient patient triaging, and violence in emergency departments.
Nominated by his colleagues, Dr. Ovens was named a Canadian Emergency Physician of the Year in 2019. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to emergency medicine including patient care, community service and hospital or health care administration.
Dr. Ovens has been the Ontario Lead for Emergency Medicine for the past decade. Most recently, he has been an important advisor to the Ontario government during the COVID-19 pandemic.
