At the forefront of many of the most pivotal discoveries since insulin, Dr. Zinman’s research has changed the way we treat both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Bernard Zinman has significantly improved the way diabetes is treated across the world - a major accomplishment given that it’s expected some 500 million people globally will have the disease by 2025.

Dr. Zinman has been at the forefront of many of the most pivotal discoveries since insulin. While Dr. Zinman consistently ranks among the world’s top one percent of researchers by citation, his impact doesn’t end there. He is revered by his patients and the countless clinicians and researchers whose lives he’s touched and careers he’s mentored.

The internationally renowned endocrinologist says he’s most proud of his work as a clinician-scientist in that this research has had a meaningful impact on the lives of patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. He has also published more than 500 papers advancing our understanding of the disease, many of which have been incorporated into national and international diabetes management guidelines and have revolutionized the day-to-day care of diabetes.

Dr. Zinman was a lead investigator in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, the largest, most comprehensive study ever conducted on type 1 diabetes. It proved that tight control of blood sugar levels through intensive insulin therapy dramatically reduced the risk of disabling and deadly complications. This research resulted in a new worldwide standard of care for type 1 diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, he was first to demonstrate the cardiovascular protection and benefit of a new class of diabetes medications which is now universally accepted.

Dr. Zinman has been a mentor and a role model for a generation of Canadian investigators. In his mission to enable people with diabetes to live as long and full lives as those without the disease, his work has changed the way we treat both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
