When Dr. Barry J. Goldlist started his trailblazing career practising geriatric medicine in 1979, it was not even recognized as a specialty in Canada. He has improved health care for seniors in Toronto and beyond through the many leadership roles he assumed over the decades.
Dr. Goldlist played an instrumental role in establishing the national organization (the Canadian Geriatrics Society) that represents clinicians in geriatric medicine and strives to advance care for older adults across the country. More recently, through his participation within the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Dr. Goldlist helped modernize the certification requirements for geriatricians in Canada, ultimately boosting the care received by Canadian seniors.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Goldlist has directly cared for thousands of older adults, always with his trademark courtesy, compassion and outstanding skill. He helped pioneer the team-based approach to care that is now commonplace in the practice of geriatric medicine, whereby geriatricians partner with social workers, nurses, physical therapists, psychiatrists, pharmacists and others to deliver true holistic care that better protects the health and independence of medically complex, older patients.
A committed educator throughout his career, Dr. Goldlist imparted his immense knowledge and passion for elder care to thousands of learners, including family doctors and other clinicians who do not specialize in geriatrics. Dr. Goldlist won the University of Toronto’s outstanding teacher award in geriatrics many times (five) and his devotion to medical education has been so great that the University of Toronto renamed the award the Barry J. Goldlist Teacher of the Year Award in 2015.
By illustrating the enormous value of geriatric medicine through his teaching, articles and presentations, Dr. Goldlist has inspired many medical students to enter the field, thus helping to ensure Canadians will continue to have access to specialized geriatric care.

Dr. Goldlist showed me the value of creating a hospital space where frail older people can come to get better and avoid unnecessary decline. This model of care has stayed with me as a way to promote health and wellness for some of the most vulnerable older adults.
